Edith Sitwell, Pavel Tchelitchew
On my trip to North Yorkshire, I heard that there is a Sitwell’s house in Scarborough is open to visitors. I immediately went there with the thought that suddenly I would see pictures or drawings of Tchelitchev there! Pavel Tchelitchev made quite a few portraits of Edith Sitwell - an English aristocrat, poet and critic. She was born in this house. The house stands on a high bank surrounded by a well-tended garden. It’s an Art Center now as the house belongs to the city. In the spacious rooms of the house nothing of the past time, an exhibition of young artists is in. The staff listens with bewilderment to my questions about Pavel Tchelitchev, but when I mention Edith Sitwell, they ask me to wait. From the depths of the house a woman comes out to meet me. She invited me to the library. “This is the only room that has survived intact,” she says, “there are photographs of Edith Sitwell and her books.” I ask about Tchelitchev as we walk. “Yes,” she laughs, “Edith seems to have been in love with a Russian artist, but he was, you know ...”. Unfortunately, there are no drawings by Tchelitchev in the house, but there are many photographs of Edith Sitwell, where one could recognise many Pavel Tchelitchev’s drawings on the walls of the house.
В моем путешествии в Северный Йоркшир я услышала что в Скарборо есть дом Ситуэлов и он открыт для посетителей. Я немедленно туда отправилась с мыслью о том, что вдруг увижу там картины или рисунки Челищева! Павел Челищев сделал довольно много портретов Эдит Ситуэлл - аглийской аристократки, поэтессы и критика. В этом доме она родилась. Дом стоит на высоком берегу окруженный ухоженным садом. Теперь дом принадлежит городу и в нем находится арт-центр. В просторных пустых комнатах выставка молодых художников. Сотрудники с недоумением слушают мои расспросы о Челищеве, но когда я упоминаю Эдит Ситуэлл, просят подождать. Из глубин дома ко мне выходит миловидная женщина и просит пройти с ней в библиотеку. “Это единственная комната, которая сохранилась в первозданном виде”, говорит она, - “там есть фотографии Эдит Ситуэлл и ее книги”. Я спрашиваю о Челищеве, пока мы идем. “Да,” - смеется она - “Эдит кажется была влюблена в русского художника, но ведь он был, вы понимаете…”. К сожалению рисунков Челищева в доме нет, но есть фотографии Эдит Ситуэлл, где она снята на фоне стен с его рисунками.
